“I have 2 sons. One is gay and one is not.” Sandra Pailet said that every time she was asked about her children. Sandra was the President of PFLAG New Orleans for 15 years. She joined PFLAG as a result of the AIDS epidemic. She continued her work because of the people she met in the GLBTQ community and the work that was necessary there. Through the years she served on many boards and worked with many groups. She was honored by PFLAG, HRC, LAG-PAC, and was Grand Marshal of the Gay Pride parade. She was also honored by the National Counseling Association's Association for Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Issues in Counseling. Perhaps her most notable achievement was hosting the national PFLAG convention in New Orleans in 1993. Sandra worked with Richard Sacher to start the PFLAG scholarship program (16 years ago.) This amazing program was the first PFLAG Scholarship program in the United States and has awarded over $300,000 to LGBTQ students. Sandra will be greatly
missed by her friends and family. She was a joy to work with. She was
tireless and an inspiration to many in the community. Sandra is mourned by
her partner, Steve Freeman, her sons David and Devan Pailet and a host of
loving friends. Sandra's family has requested donations in her memory to the PFLAG Scholarship Fund, which she founded. Checks should be made payable to PFLAG Scholarship Fund and mailed to PFLAG New Orleans, P.O. Box 15515, New Orleans, Louisiana 70175. Please indicate on the memo line that the gift is in Sandra's memory.
