PFLAG New Orleans has been on the forefront of anti-bullying efforts in Louisiana for many years. We have lobbied at the legislature in Baton Rouge to pass anti-bullying legislation, participated in the Safe Schools for All Program, and worked with area schools and educators to raise awareness of the dangers of bullying. PFLAG New Orleans has also been a strong supporter of anti-bullying efforts of other groups to fight bullying. PFLAG New Orleans recognizes that the tragedy of bullying has been taking a horrific toll on ALL of our children: LGBT, perceived to be LGBT, straight, and otherwise thought to be different, long before the recent spate tragic suicides made headlines.
This is why we are pleased to support the new anti-bullying initiative of PFLAG National and the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN): Claim Your Rights.
In the absence of adequate protections for our children, we encourage students, teachers, parents and other concerned people to fight bullying by filing complaints about bullying with the Office of Civil Rights of the Department of Education. For more information about how do to this, please visit the Claim Your Rights page of the PFLAG National website.
