About PFLAG New Orleans

About PFLAG NO

PFLAG New Orleans one of the oldest organizations in New Orleans serving the LGBT Community. PFLAG New Orleans held its first meeting at the St. Louis Community Center in May 1982. Since then, PFLAG New Orleans has had a special mission promoting the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through: support, to cope with an adverse society; education, to enlighten an ill- informed public; and advocacy, to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. PFLAG New Orleans provides opportunities for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.

In its nearly 30 year history, PFLAG New Orleans has worked tirelessly to secure the dignity and equal rights for LGBT persons by working for such things as the New Orleans LGBT Civil Rights Ordinance; supporting a number of community organizations and events such as:

The ACLU of Louisiana

N.O. B.E.A.T. I.T.

The Big Easy Metropolitan Community Church

The LGBT Community Center of New Orleans

The Community Coalition

The Forum for Equality

The New Orleans Gay Men's Chorus

Gay Pride New Orleans

Halloweens in New Orleans

The Human Rights Campaign

The NO/AIDS Task Force

The Krewe of Petronius

Project Lazarus

Volleyball New Orleans

and gay/straight alliances in high schools and colleges in the New Orleans area.

PFLAG New Orleans has been on the forefront for the incorporation of transgenders in the broader struggle for LGBT equality, by fighting for the inclusion of transgenders in the mission statement of PFLAG National and in the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

PFLAG New Orleans has been active for many years in anti-bullying efforts, by testifying before the state legislature in Baton Rouge, and working towards the Safe-Schools Initiative. PFLAG New Orleans has also provided LGBT sensitivity training for the New Orleans Police Department, as well as speakers for area schools, churches, hospitals, and businesses such as Shell and Chevron.

The PFLAG New Orleans Scholarship Program is a special source of pride. The PFLAG New Orleans Scholarship Program has given over $500,000 to more than 450 LGBT students for Louisiana since 1989, making the PFLAG New Orleans Scholarship Program one of the largest scholarships for LGBT students in the United States, and it has served as a role model for the national PFLAG Scholarship program and LGBT scholarship programs around the country.

Although PFLAG New Orleans is an active presence at the many events supporting the LGBT community in New Orleans, perhaps nothing is more important than PFLAG's own monthly meetings. These meetings provide, a safe, loving, non-judgmental and supportive environment for not only the parents, family, and friends of LGBT people, but also to members of the LGBT community and those who wish to learn more about the community. More information about the monthly meetings of PFLAG New Orleans can be found here.
